Why The Benefits of Google+ for SEO Could Soon Be Over!

The Google search engine algorithm is incredibly complex and updated regularly, and no one knows exactly what's in it. While there are numerous theories about what Google likes and doesn't like, there are essentially only three things that are known about Google search engines:

  • Some degree of natural keywords are important.
  • Unique and interesting content is more valuable than reposted/copied content.
  • Incoming links have an effect on your page rank.
Those are the only three things that Google itself has announced about their algorithm. Everything else is merely a guess. But based on what many marketers are finding, one thing that appears to have an effect on your search engine rank is sharing your content in Google+. It appears, at least the way that marketers have been using it, that Google is rewarding people for using their Google+ system.

The Problem This Will Create For Google

It may seem at first glance as though this isn't a problem. It may even be good for your SEO, at least temporarily, as you initiate more Google+ marketing practices in order to take advantage of the process. You may even see a jump in your page rank, and clearly there is benefit to doing whatever it takes to achieve that boost.

But the reality is that if Google really is rewarding websites that promote their content with Google+, the value is highly unlikely to last. There are simply too many reasons to believe that any type of content rewarding structure will come back to hurt them in the long run, and Google is too intelligent a company to allow that to happen. Consider the following:
  • Google+ Results Are Not Necessarily Relevant Results – This is the key issue. To survive as a search engine, Google needs to be bringing people to relevant results for keywords. Allowing this type of marketing tactic to succeed means that less valuable results may show up above more relevant results, decreasing Google's value to the user.

  • Legal Issues – While it's not clear the legal rights that Google has to reward people for using their products, chances are that those efforts would result in some type of backlash that could have legal ramifications, because of the way that it would affect modern day businesses – forcing them to use their other products if they hope to have success.

  • Marketing Saturation – The goal of any Google+ technique would not be to affect their search – it would be to get more people to use the Google+ service. Unfortunately, if it does appear that Google+ affects search results, the more likely outcome is that there is a saturation of businesses and marketers without the everyday users that they want to compete with Facebook and Twitter.
These are just a few of the potential problems that will occur if Google is and keeps rewarding the Google plus system.

The Future of Google+ For Marketing

None of this is to say that marketers shouldn't use the Google system now to market their content, or that social media marketing with Google+ won't be valuable – it probably will be. But the benefits that people see right now are unlikely to continue in the long term, and investing in other SEO strategies and content is going to go back to being more important for the online marketplace.
